It's been a busy year for space, with Mars landings and SpaceX rocket explosions dominating the news. Here's what to expect in the coming months.
Two words have dominated space in 2021:PerseveranceandIngenuity。这Martian robots top the list of cosmic wonders as we approach the halfway point, delivering stunning views of the Martian surface而且,在ingenuity的情况下,实现另一个星球上的第一个动力飞行。
To keep you in the know, CNET launched the SPACE CALENDAR (all caps for戏剧性的宇宙效果)在2020年,覆盖所有大火箭发射,迷人的流星淋浴,史诗般的eClipses甚至是各种各样的科学里程碑。

Remember theincredible explosion of SpaceX's SN8 prototype12月吗?SpaceX公司认为,一个成功s way to a fully fledged spacecraft that can get to orbit and -- eventually -- to Mars. In late 2020 or early 2021, Elon Musk's spaceflight company expects to send the next numbered prototype on its way. Its three powerful Raptor engines are attached and it has been wheeled onto the launchpad, so the prototype is likely to fly early in 2021.
SpaceX and the FAA traded barbs over launch safety waivers。It was another spectacular test and, as you can see in the image above, it ended with another explosion. SN10 is vertical at the company's Boca Chica facility -- so it's likely to fly soon. Check back here and we'll keep you updated.
这United Arab Emirates' Hope (Al Amal) probe, which was launched in July 2020, performed a Mars Orbital Insertion (MOI) on Feb. 9, slipping into the clutches of the red planet's gravity.机动使阿拉伯联合酋长国成为第五个国家达到火星, following the US, Russia, China and India.
只是take a look at the first photo from Hope to see what we can expect in years to come。

China's Tianwen-1 ("Questions to Heaven") spacecraft is carrying a Martian orbiter, lander and rover as cargoand made its own insertion just a day after Hope. The Chinese mission will not release it's lander or rover immediately to the surface. It's expected to release those vehicles sometime in May.
这rover has a lifespan of around 92 days and Li Zhencai, deputy commander of the project, told CCTV the mission will be completed around "the end of August."
这y did it again! On Feb. 18,NASA engineers and scientists celebrated the arrival of Perseverance on the red planet。有MEMES APLENYandone particular engineer who captured people's hearts and minds。
It's set to be a huge year for Martian robots and specifically, the quest to find signs of ancient life on the red planet. Along with Perseverance, China's Tianwen-1 lander and rover will also be putting Mars dirt under the microscope -- however, it's not expected to touch down until later in the year.

第三次seemed to be the charm对于麝香的星舰原型。 麝香detailed the reason for the failuresa couple of days later: some of the internal components made of copper were burning during the spacecraft's descent. That's never a good sign.
SpaceX will continue to test Starship prototypes from Boca Chica throughout the year, gearing up for the prototype's first orbital flight potentially before 2022.
Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly. This time, the explosion was caused by "a relatively small" methane leak on board the prototype, according to SpaceX head honcho Musk。
这Large Hadron Collider, the highest-energy particle collider on the planet, has been powered down since Dec. 10, 2018. In March, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) flicked it back on again.
Its third observational run or "Run 3" should kick off in 2022, with a period of commissioning and magnet training to get things up to scratch for examining the atomic world in March. It will then be shut down in 2025 and upgraded again, for its fourth run in 2027. I'm putting this in aspace日历,因为,物理到处都是。
Flying on Earth? Boring, easy, routine, old hat. Flying on Mars? Cool, hard, new, never been done before -- until NASA's Ingenuity rotorcraft achieved the feat on April 19, 2021. The chopper wasdeposited on the surface of Mars by Perseverancein early April and had looked to fly on the red planet "no earlier than April 11."
当inenyity拿到火星的天空时,it was the first time humans have flown a vehicle on another planet。It's considered a "tech demonstration" and after the successful flight, the Ingenuity team is planning to fly the rotorcraft five times, with increasing difficulty.
SpaceX made history when it sent第一个商业船员到国际空间站aboard Crew-1 in November 2020. On April 22,Crew-2 backed up that achievement, launching NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, plus ESA's Thomas Pesquet and Japan's Akihiko Hoshide. The capsule containing the astronauts was Crew Dragon Endeavour, which first flew astronauts to the ISS duringSpacex和NASA的历史演示1使命。
Chinalaunched the first module of its planned orbital space stationin April. The module, known as Tianhe-1 ("harmony of the heavens"), will power the whole station and is set to house a crew of three taikonauts on six month stints, much like the International Space Station, when assembly is complete. Almost a dozen missions will be required to complete the space station by the end of 2022.
这rocket eventually burnt up over the Indian Oceanand debris fell just west of the Maldives. A close call -- and there is likely to be another two reentries when China sends the other modules to orbit.
然而,中国空间计划waited patiently to attempt the first touchdown, with most estimates suggesting late April or early May for the historic attempt.
Zhurong," China's Mars rover, should reach the surface: Friday, May 14 at 4:11 p.m. PT.
China is going big here -- an orbiter will continue to circle the red planet, and Zhurong will be steered to the surface atop a landing vehicle. Mars is typically a very mean-spirited planet: It kills around half of all spacecraft that try to land there, so it's a huge and daring mission for China's space agency. The country's space agency has a strong heritage of moon exploration though, with its嫦娥探头实现了太空探索的令人难以置信的壮举在过去的三年里。

这就是你的方式a total lunar eclipse of the flower moon...... We'll provide a bigger update as it gets closer to May.
这Johnny Cash eclipse, as it's affectionately known by nobody except myself, will occur over parts of the Northern Hemisphere on June 10. A ring of fire eclipse occurs when the moon only partially blocks sunlight, leaving a dazzling ring of fire in the sky. The most recent eclipse (an "annular" eclipse, in scientific parlance) occurred in 2020 and it was spectacular. The best places to watch will be across Russia, Canada and Greenland, but there will be plenty of livestreams and places to watch this one, we assume. We'll bring you all the details as it gets closer.
SpaceX's Mars prototype rockets have had a successful year in 2021 and the spaceflight company is gearing up for an orbital flight. In May, filings with the Federal Communications Commissionrevealed Musk's rocket brand will attempt to reach orbitand make a soft landing near Hawaii. Timing on this one is unclear, but July has been suggested in the past.
BepiColombo, a joint mission between the ESA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), had a pretty big 2020. It was called into action as it执行了金星的飞行,以检查高层大气中的生命迹象。
One of the most ambitious missions on NASA's slate is known as Lucy, which will attempt to visit eight asteroids over the next decade. It will be the first mission to study the Trojans, a group of asteroids that trail and lead Jupiter in orbit around the sun.
这mission is named after the fossilized remains of an ancestral human discovered in Ethiopia in 1974, which rewrote the history books on human evolution. NASA's Lucy might end up rewriting the history of the solar system. The Trojans likely harbor clues to the origin of our solar system and operate as time capsules, allowing scientists to understand the environment of the solar system's earliest eons.
A particularly spooky launch date forNASA's long-delayed next- generation space telescope。这planned successor to NASA's workhorse Hubble, James Webb is a major upgrade to our capabilities in studying the early universe. Granted things go well, it should be able to see some of the earliest galaxies that ever formed.
But it has been a struggle for the telescope to get into space. It's now coming up to its 25th birthday and it hasn't even got off the ground -- with the pandemic setting it back even further. Granted this launch date holds, it will be a big (and spooky) day for NASA. Another fingers crossed mission.
这CST-100 Starliner, a cone-shaped spacecraft designed to deliver astronauts to the International Space Station as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, has had its fair share of ups and downs. Thefirst Orbital Flight Test in December 2019(wow, it wasthatlong ago?) experienced an "anomaly" with the spacecraft's clock which meant it didn't reach the ISS as it had intended and, instead, safely landed back in the desert two days later.
If it all goes successfully, it could pave the way for astronauts to be launched within the capsule later in the year. Fingers crossed.
If you're some of the scattered wildlife that spends time in Antarctica (or perhaps some lucky researchers), then you'll be able to catch the onlytotalsolar eclipse2021
这next total solar eclipse after that won't be until 2023 and it will only be visible in parts of Southeast Asia and Australia. The US will experience a total solar eclipse in 2024.
Provided everything works out exactly as hoped in March, the first crewed test flight of the Starliner could head to the International Space Station in June. Similar toSpaceX's Demo-2 mission in 2020, this would be the final check for Boeing's spacecraft before it becomes operational. A big achievement, should it get there.
NASA's plan to return humans to the moon in 2024 involves a series of missions under the Artemis banner. The very first Artemis mission, Artemis I, is scheduled to launch in 2021. The missions will use ahuge, new rocket known as the Space Launch System或者是SLS,它将携带未被卷曲的航天器,称为ORION orion到月球轨道。
NASA has discussed this one for November, but there's every chance it will slip later than that and potentially to 2022. If the mission succeeds, we might see Artemis II -- with a human crew -- launch in 2023.
这mission was slated to launch in 2020, but大流行病。Will it launch in 2021? That's what ISRO is shooting for.
